Kazakh Journey

Kazakhstan Past and Present

We began our day exploring Kazakhstan's past. Our first stop was a huge park in the middle of the city with a gorgeous Russian Orthodox Catherdral and several interesting war memorials, one of which is pictured below:

We also experienced part of Kazakhstan's musical heritage at the Kazakhstan Museum of Musical Instruments. The highlight of the day was listening to a 73 year-old poet and musician play a "dombra" -- Kazakhstan's version of a guitar -- and tell us (thanks to our translator/driver Sasha) about his life during the Soviet times. Alex now has his own miniture dombra that he carries around with him wherever we go. Check out the traditional Kazakh dress on our musician friend:

But, not to be outdone, our very own baby Mikayla has already started working on her music career:

All and all, it was a great day, especially when Mommy and daughter are this happy together:

And we'll sign off with a great picture Sasha took of the Spring tulips popping up all over Almaty:

Wow, Tom would love to get his hands on that musician's outfit. What gorgeous places you're seeing! I love your happy pictures. Don't you think we should start a petition to repaint the cathedral in St Pete to give it a little more character?

Congratulations guys! What a great idea to do this to keep everyone part of your whole adventure. Your new little girl looks very happy (you all do). How much longer will you be staying there? It looks really cool. Enjoy

Hello all! I posted my first comment on the wrong day; did you ever see it?? This website is awesome and your two children are beautiful. Caitlin loves seeing pictures of the two of them and now wants a little sister of her own (fat chance!). Love to you all,
